9 unique characteristics of the giant of Wat Jaeng

When examining the two giants, it is clear that the artistic decoration of both reflects the 9 unique characteristics of the Giant at Wat Jaeng, which distinguish it from other giants.

  1. It has a three-tiered head, where the uppermost tier represents the face of a deity, symbolising the lineage of Brahma, which conveys knowledge, capability, and power that can dominate all three realms (Sahassadeja).
  2. It features a total of 10 faces, representing the six sciences and four magical arts (Tosakan).
  3. The giant stands in a distinct pose, with legs spread and knees bent, symbolising strength and a formidable presence, exuding immense power and fear.
  4. It is a giant from the Ramayana, a Hindu literature commissioned during the reign of King Rama II, crafted in the reign of King Rama III according to Buddhist beliefs, resulting in a beautifully terrifying representation of the Giant at Wat Jaeng in Thai style.
  5. This giant is constructed according to the traditional Thai Khon dance style, making it a highly respected figure in the realm of Thai performance art.
  6. It wears the Indra’s bow, a symbol of rank adorning its shoulders. The Indra’s bow is a crucial emblem of the giant and the deity, often integrated with other accessories, and the Giant at Wat Jaeng boasts a striking and beautiful Indra’s bow that represents its great status and power over all giants and spirits.
  7. It is adorned with golden bracelets, symbolising prosperity in all business endeavours.
  8. It bears a ring, signifying its status as the king of all giants, with power, charm, and a commanding aura, unlike other giants, which are usually depicted without a ring.
  9. The staff of the Giant at Wat Jaeng is embellished with gems, differing from the typical twisted staff seen in other giants. It is believed to originate from the miraculous properties of the Sahassadeja staff, which is considered more sacred than any other giant in existence.
